Moving to Luxembourg in 2025: a practical guide

Published on 22 September 2025 (Last updated on 3 November 2025)

Moving to Luxembourg means choosing a dynamic, multicultural country with a renowned quality of life. Between administrative procedures, finding accommodation and getting to grips with the transport system, the first steps can seem complicated. In this practical guide for 2025, you will find everything you need to settle in smoothly and enjoy your new life in the Grand Duchy to the full.

ADMINISTRATIVE PROCEDURES TO BE TAKEN

  1. Register with your local council

Within eight days of arrival, you must register directly with the local council of the place where you intend to reside, providing proof of identity and proof of accommodation. This will enable you to obtain the certificate of residence required by several government departments.

By renting a Flexiroom, each tenant has the option of registering their address as their place of residence, with the rental agreement serving as proof to be presented to the local council.

  1. Obtain a National Insurance number

Applications must be made online or by post to the Joint Social Security Centre (CCSS) after registering with the local council. This application is handled by your employer unless you wish to take out private health insurance to benefit from additional advantages. Please check with your company’s human resources department or visit the MyGuichet.lu website : https://guichet.public.lu/fr/citoyens/sante/affiliation-securite-sociale.html

  1. Taking out insurance for a rental

Civil liability and home insurance are not compulsory, but the landlord may require them depending on the terms of your tenancy agreement.

FIND ACCOMMODATION

In Luxembourg, there are several accommodation options available depending on your budget and priorities: co-living, traditional renting or buying. Co-living is attractive due to its flexibility, all-inclusive services and friendly atmosphere. Traditional renting guarantees more privacy, but often involves agency fees and additional charges. Buying, on the other hand, represents a major investment in a particularly tight property market.

In this context, the temporary accommodation option offered by Flexiroom is a real stepping stone to home ownership: thanks to its flexible duration (from 2 months) and its all-inclusive furnished format, it allows prospective buyers to enjoy comfortable, hassle-free accommodation while they search for the ideal property to invest in.

In 2025, average rents vary greatly depending on the neighbourhood. Central areas such as Centre-Ville, Kirchberg and Belair have the highest rents, while areas such as Esch-sur-Alzette and Differdange remain more affordable.

To reduce your costs, look for listings without agency fees and check whether the advertised price includes charges. Included services (internet, electricity, maintenance, household linen) can represent significant savings and simplify your daily life.

GETTING AROUND EASILY IN LUXEMBOURG

In Luxembourg, public transport is free for everyone, making travel easy and economical. Buses, trams and trains provide efficient coverage throughout the country, as well as cross-border connections to France, Belgium and Germany.

From our residence in Belair, you can easily reach the city centre, the central station and the Kirchberg business district thanks to several direct bus routes. The ‘Dix Septembre’ bus stop is less than a 2-minute walk away, and the tram line is just a few minutes away by bus.

From our residence in Wallis, getting around is even easier. Located just a stone’s throw from Central Station, you have immediate access to the entire national and international rail network, as well as bus and tram lines connecting all areas of the capital.

Below you will find a map of Luxembourg showing our two residences as well as the city’s main transport routes and networks.
