5 museums to visit in Luxembourg

Despite its size, Luxembourg has nothing to envy its European neighbors, as the country is culturally rich, especially the capital, which is packed with museums and art galleries. Throughout the Grand Duchy, there are over 60 museums in all, offering a unique and enriching experience. If you’re a museum lover, you won’t be disappointed by the country’s must-see addresses. Let’s take a look at the museums to visit in Luxembourg.

1. MNHA

Luxembourg’s famous Musée National d’Histoire et d’Art (National Museum of History and Art) is a particularly attractive building in the heart of the city’s historic center, not far from the famous Grand Ducal Palace. Visitors can explore the permanent collection along 4 thematic paths, including one for the very young. As time goes by, we can also enjoy ephemeral exhibitions. It’s open from Tuesday to Sunday, with opening times to suit each day, and costs €7 for an adult.

2. MUDAM

This is Luxembourg’s counterpart to legendary international contemporary art museums such as the Pompidou, Mamco and Moma in New York. Its architecture reflects its artistic orientation, as does its location in Luxembourg’s Kirchberg business district. There’s also a café within the museum, which can be visited in Lëtzebuergesch, French or English. The museum is open every day except Tuesday, at various times, and costs €8 for adults.

3. Lëtzebuerg City Museum

A museum dedicated to the country’s history was needed, and so it is the City Museum, also located in the heart of Luxembourg City’s historic center. Its architecture is none other than a restored ensemble of four former bourgeois houses on Rue du Saint Esprit. It houses a collection of historical objects dating from several decades to the present day, with the aim of safeguarding Luxembourg’s heritage. The museum is open every day except Monday and Thursday, at night. Admission for adults is €5.

Or MNHN to its friends. It hosts permanent and temporary exhibitions on the theme of natural history and science, often instructive and sometimes unusual. It is also a scientific research institute, with a particular focus on natural heritage. The museum can be visited every day except Monday, and costs €5 for adults.

Good to know

These different museums organize a number of events throughout the year, including the famous “Nuit des Musées” (Museum Night) in October, a way of visiting the capital’s museums in a different way for one night, and being surprised by a wide-ranging program specially designed for the event. Enjoy your visit!
