Do you live in Brussels and are looking for something to do this weekend?
Good news: the Belgian capital is brimming with free or very affordable activities. Are you a fan of culture, unusual walks or great deals? Brussels is full of low-budget activities. Here are five ideas that are accessible to everyone, to try (or try again) over a weekend.
THE HUNT FOR COMIC STRIPS

Have you ever noticed these XXL drawings on street corners? Brussels pays tribute to its comic book heroes with more than 80 giant murals scattered throughout the city. The very first one, featuring Broussaille, was unveiled in 1991 and kicked off this unique project.
To admire them all, download the free comic strip trail map from the Visit Brussels website: a walk of around 6 km that will show you your city in a whole new light.
A MUST-SEE: THE GRAND-PLACE

It is impossible to live in Brussels without knowing the Grand Place, listed by UNESCO and among the most beautiful squares in the world. Surrounded by old guild houses and the Gothic town hall, it dazzles both day and night.
Furthermore, in 1695, the square was destroyed by French bombardments and then rebuilt in four years, regaining its majestic appearance.
THE BASILICA OF KOEKELBERG

Often overlooked, the Basilica of the Sacred Heart in Koekelberg is the sixth largest church in the world. Begun in 1905, its construction, interrupted by wars, was completed in 1970.

EXPLORE THE CITY… BY BIKE!

Perhaps you’d prefer a more active weekend? Exploring Brussels by bike is an original and economical way to keep busy. With the Villo! bike-sharing service, you can cycle from the historic centre to the canal, take a break at Tour & Taxis, then follow the cycle paths to the Atomium or the Basilica of Koekelberg.
In a 1.5-hour ride costing around €1.50 per person, you can travel through lively neighbourhoods and green spaces, enjoying the city at your own pace.
THE MUSEUM OF ILLUSION

Right in the city centre, the Museum of Illusions offers a fun and interactive experience, even if you already know Brussels.
For €17.50 (or €14.50 with a student or senior discount), you can immerse yourself in a world of optical illusions. Distorting rooms, optical effects, sensory games… more than 60 illusions await you for a quirky experience.
To do with friends, family or even housemates: guaranteed laughter!
Brussels proves that you don’t have to spend a fortune to enjoy yourself at the weekend. From unusual walks to discover comic strip murals, iconic visits such as the Grand Place or the Basilica of Koekelberg, and original experiences such as a bike ride or a visit to the Museum of Illusions, the city is full of activities to suit all budgets. Whether you’re a culture vulture, an explorer or simply looking for good deals, Brussels always has something to offer… without emptying your wallet.
And you, what are your plans for this weekend?
